Modems are used to connect PLC's in industrial environments. They are suitable for accessing field data loggers or data-acquisition units in process plants.
2.4 GHz device (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) are now available which share the following features:
- 10/100 BaseT Ethernet plus RS232/RS485 serial ports.
- Military-grade AES security encryption of wireless data.
- Firewall protection and efficient wireless management.
- Message filtering at MAC & IP address level.
- Configuration and diagnostics via web-browser
- Remote configuration and diagnostics via the wireless link
- Automatic changeover to another Access Point if the wireless link fails (mesh networking)
- Modbus Master capability for both Modbus TCP and serial Modbus RTU
- Configurable as Access Point / Client; Bridge / Router / Repeater

- Operates at the 2.4GHz ISM band using Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS). The transmission technique spreads data packets across a wide channel, effectively transmitting on multiple narrow channels simultaneously to minimize interference.
- 802.11b compliant 2.4GHz DSSS, wireless data up to 11 Mbits/sec.
- Typical line-of-sight distance 5 miles North America (4W ERP);
- 802.11 WDS mesh networking.
